Crítica del álbum: La Deriva— Vetusta Morla

by Crystal Mendoza

Since ’98 the band of six members has been involved in state music competitions, playing at benefit and radio concerts, releasing albums, and touring around the world presenting their Spanish indie style. Since the creation of their band they have included creativity as an essential part of their music which is why they have obtained special acknowledgments in national festivals. Even their name represents the importance of the desire to find reality through the imagination that resides in all of us; Vetusta Morla took its name from a character in the iconic fantasy novel, The Neverending Story, with themes similar to those the musical group continues to instill in their lyrics.

The third and most recent album “A La Deriva” was released April 8, 2014. With their familiar style of indie rock, they added a small twist of pop. The title track exposes the voice of the lead singer Pucho and in the chorus it’s David Garcia, the latter (el Indio) also adorns the whole song with his battery. Álvaro B Baglietto’s bass and the guitars of Guillermo Galván and Juan Manuel Latorre apply scales and rhythms throughout the song and the programming and percussion of Jorge González complete this musical hit. The lyrics describe the development of individuals and their recognition of actual situations by saying, “I’ve had time to unfold myself… I switched from recreation to gasoline.” They also talk about the showmen of our society wanting to buy us, “putting a price on my agony, we must invent a solution.” Overall, Vetusta Morla expresses the hope for freedom on the leeway.
