Films to Look Forward to in 2013

by Jay Wallace

2012 was an interesting, often surprising year for film. Especially surprising, given 2011’s output.

As we get older, the enthusiasm we had for what we loved in our youth begins to fade, be it sports, cars, computers, reading, or film. Often this is triggered by lackluster experiences that dull the shininess of what we loved, and after the rather lackluster film slate of 2011, there was nowhere for Hollywood to go but up. The Raid: Redemption, The Cabin in the Woods, The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, Django Unchained, all these films and many others, for me personally, reignited my love of film, and hopefully it will continue on into 2013 only growing stronger.

There’s quite a bit to look forward to this year. Arnold Schwarzenegger returns to action mode with The Last Stand, and it looks freakin’ awesome. Later in the year, we have the intriguing sci-fi flick Oblivion featuring Tom Cruise, Robert Downey Jr. throws on his newest suit as Tony Stark in Iron Man 3, and we get to return to the Enterprise with J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness. Among other sequels to genuinely look forward to, Kick-Ass 2 is coming out the summer with Jim Carrey playing a possible new anti-hero/villain alongside Kick-Ass and Hit Girl.

The other sweet sci-fi movie to look out for is Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, where giant robots fight giant monsters. The end-of-the-world genre also hasn’t run out of steam yet, with Marc Forster and Brad Pitt’s adaption of World War Z and the return of Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost with The World’s End.

These are only a few of the notable films coming out in 2013; there are many more in the pipeline. I know I’m excited. What about you?
