Single Review: Retrofette – Photogenic

by Laura Giagos

2021 is going to see Denver’s best synth pop outfit Retrofette become one of the biggest bands in Colorado. And when their album comes out, 2022 will see Retrofette “pop” well beyond our humble Rocky Mountain state. Their first single of the year – “Photogenic” – is a glossy, pulsating track ready for the club … whenever those become a thing again.

Stripping away the frill and grandeur of modern electronic music, “Photogenic” is a simple yet textured synth number throwing back to groups like Hot Chip and Hercules & Love Affair.

It’s clean, simple synth tones lay the groundwork for vocalist Sean Culliton’s cool, sultry mumble-like voice to set the mood. It’s a huge step forward for this band, staking a claim outside the universe of local musicians. If ever there’s one Denver band to watch this year, it’s Retrofette.
